Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

By Carol Dweck

This is a book that is backed by research data conducted by Carol Dweck. The book banks on the premise that there are 2 kinds of beliefs – Growth and Fixed Mindset. They are just beliefs to be incorporated. People with Fixed Mindset believe that abilities are fixed and cannot be changed, something like – talent is by birth and you have it if you just have it ! On the contrast, people with Growth Mindset are the one who believe that abilities are not fixed but can be learned and improved. People with growth mindset are the ones who don’t fear of how they look or appear to have low self esteem issues – they are the ones who are more interested in learning than anything else.

I happen to read this and understand concept back in 2017 and it has been a game changer. I revisted the book via Audible. The author covers the same premises of Fixed vs Growth Mindset in her entire book and how it play an important role in different fields .

The Structure of the book can be broadly laid down as:

  1. Introduction (First 3 chapters) on Mindset and concept
    1. Abilities are not fixed
    2. They can be developed and learned
    3. Mindset is a belief
  2. Mindset in School:
    • Here authors gives several examples on how students with fixed and growth mindset perform.
  3. Mindset in Business:
    • Author talks how about growth mindset can be of help in business and can help you work your path upwards.
  4. Mindset in Realtionships:
    • We never think relationships as learning opportunities. How overcoming shyness and adopting growth mindsets can reveal so much about us and others.
  5. Mindset in Parents, Mentors and teachers:
    • A great chapter for parents and mentor on how praise should be used. It is wise to praise children in their hard work than to praise their abilities. This gives them an exposure to Growth Mindset early on.
  6. Conclusion – mindset scenarios.
    • Here Author describes this chapter as more of workshop.
    • She gives in some practical approaches and how can you react or how you will react based on situation given and adopt a fixed or a growth mindset.

The whole book is based on same premises of Growth vs Fixed Mindset backed by research and experiments and the book is expanded with various scenarios where it can be applied and success can be made possible. In my opinion, this is a highly recommended book if you are looking to have a change in your attitude and grow in your life to a next level.

I have a detailed summary of the book – which I can blog more – if you feel. Just post in the comments below.
